About the event

See yourself in this subversive musical comedy about unapologetic love, identity and the underestimated power and passions of fandom.

Edna is fourteen and is head over heels in love with Harry - he’s beautiful, talented, but there’s just one problem: he’s the star of the world’s biggest boyband. Getting Harry’s attention might seem impossible, but there’s nothing that Edna won’t do to prove to Harry that she’s the one...

Written by award winning playwright, screenwriter and composer Yve Blake, FANGIRLS was first presented to sell-out crowds by Belvoir St Theatre in 2019. The dizzying success of this pop musical phenomenon has cemented FANGIRLS as Australia's contribution to a Gen Z wave of musical juggernauts—in the company of SIX, Mean Girls, Moulin Rouge and more.

FANGIRLS has garnered critical acclaim including an ARIA nomination (Best Original Soundtrack or Musical Theatre Cast Album 2021) and Winner of Sydney Theatre Award for Best Mainstage Musical 2019, and influenced Yve Blake's 2019 TEDxSydney talk “For the love of Fangirls” which has now been promoted to an official TED talk.

Joining rising star Manali Datar (she/her, Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, White Pearl) in the role of Edna will be; Blake Appelqvist (they/them, Frozen) in the role of lead singer of True Connection and hearthrob, Harry and Danielle Barnes (she/her, The Boy from Oz, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) as Edna’s mother. Making their main stage debuts as Edna’s best friends are Jesse Dutlow (he/him, The Voice Australia) as Saltypringl, Milo Harthil (she/her, Bonnie and Clyde) as Jules, Tonieka Del Rosario (she/her, The Wedding Singer) as Brianna and Mel O’Brien (she/her, The Gospel According To Jesus, Queen Of Heaven) as Lily.

Yve Blake's new Australian musical returns to Sydney to celebrate the power and passion of teenagers. The part pop-concert part musical challenges how we ask young girls to see themselves with wit, comedy and euphoric joy. Screaming is very much encouraged.
